MADIKERI: Madikeri town is experiencing severe drinking water scarcity. Empty vessels lining up near the taps on both sides of the road has become a common sight and quarrels for water at pubic taps has become the order of the day. The main water supply source to the city, Kootuhole, has dried up. It caters to the needs of over 65 per cent of the households in the town. The other sources such as Kannandabane and Roshanara have also gone dry. The City Municipal Council (CMC) is without an elected body. Councillors feign ignorance over the seriousness of the situation. "We have no funds," some of the councillors say. The CMC has taken up works of removing silt from the Kootuhole reservoir at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs. The Karnataka Land Army Corporation, which is entrusted with the de-silting job has been assured of funds. The de-silting work began two days ago.
