CPI(M) to stay away from UPA Government's celebrations

Special Correspondent

Left unhappy with UPA's economic policies relating to FDI, banking "It is their celebration, so they will celebrate. We are not very eager," says Jyoti Basu

NEW DELHI: The two-day meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau concluded here on Sunday amid indications that the Left parties may stay away from the May 22 function in the capital to mark the completion of one year of the United Progressive Alliance Government in office.

"It is their celebration, so they will celebrate. I do not think we can participate. We are not very eager," Marxist leader and Polit Bureau member Jyoti Basu told reporters after the conclusion of the Polit Bureau meeting. Mr. Basu said that he had replied to the invitation of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressing his inability to attend the dinner on May 18, which is to follow a UPA-Left meeting. This meeting is to review the performance of the UPA Government and set the agenda for the next year. He left for Kolkata in the evening.

Polit Bureau member and senior trade union leader M.K. Pandhe said there were some positive as well as negative aspects relating to the UPA Government's performance.

Not much change

While the coalition government had done well in improving relations with Pakistan and China and tackling foreign policy issues, it had failed to live up to expectations on the economic front. He said that there had not been much change in the way the Government followed economic policies.

He said it was only due to pressure from the Left that the Government introduced amendments to Bills on patents and special economic zones.

Dissatisfaction

Party sources said that the CPI(M) was critical of the way the Government had pursued banking reforms, foreign direct investment in telecom and other key areas.

The recently held 18th party congress too had expressed its dissatisfaction over handling of these issues.

He said the UPA Government "would use the occasion of the completion of one year in office on May 22 to project their achievements" but the CPI(M) had reservations on implementation of the Common Minimum Programme.

Sources said that Polit Bureau meeting also discussed the role of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party over the past one year, the boycott of Parliament in the budget session, and the series of reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) that criticised the previous National Democratic Alliance Government for several irregularities in the disinvestment of public sector undertakings.

It also discussed the Pensions and Employment Guarantee bill and recent political developments in Gujarat.
