BJP will watch Government's conduct: Jaitley

CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party would have to watch the conduct of the United Progressive Alliance Government before responding to its appeal to take part in the meetings of the department-related Standing Committees, BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said on Sunday.

Replying to a query at a press conference here on Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's appeal to the Opposition to participate in the meetings during the inter-session, he said the Government also had to address the causes of the boycott.

Dubbing the media appeals as "lip service to break the stalemate," he said the Congress leadership had said the Opposition should apologise before coming back to Parliament.

Planning strategy

On ending the boycott of the Parliament, he said: "The National Democratic Alliance's strategy has been clearly decided. The boycott will not be continued indefinitely. If the Government alters its attitude, we will consider what we can do in the matter. When the next session approaches, the NDA will certainly meet and plan its strategy."

Mr. Jaitley said that when the Opposition was denied its legitimate space, Parliamentary obstruction became part of Parliamentary practice.

On the completion of the UPA Government's first year in office, he said, "the principal achievement of the Government is that despite inaction, vendetta and inability to take decisions, its anti-BJPism has got it going for one year. But Governments do not last indefinitely on sheer negativism. People expect results and make tough judgements."

When asked about the Jharkhand BJP leader, Babulal Marandi's revolt against the appointment of a new president for the State unit, Mr. Jaitley said the chiefs of the State units were appointed after extensive consultations with the party president and vice president. "If anybody has a point of view, it will be preferable to express it in the party forum," he said.
