NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee meets here on Monday to review the performance of the United Progressive Alliance Government and finalise the schedule for election of the party president. After the Congress-led coalition came to power on May 22, CWC meetings have been rare. A meeting on December 23 condoled the death of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, that day, and another on December 29 took stock of the situation following the tsunami havoc. Interestingly, the committee did not meet either after the success in the Maharashtra Assembly elections or after the setback in the Bihar and Jharkhand Assembly elections in February this year. With the UPA Government due to complete one year in office, the CWC will set the tone to look back and look forward. The idea is to take a look at what had been achieved by the party during the past one year and determine the course ahead.
A formal exercise
The CWC meeting precedes a formal exercise the UPA-Left parties will review the working of the coalition in the past one year and goals for the next one year. The UPA leaders are being invited for a formal function on May 22 marking the completion of one year where a report to the nation outlining the task accomplished by the Government will be showcased. The party is in the last phase of organisational elections and the electoral college, consisting of Pradesh Congress Committee delegates to vote for new president, is almost in place. It is likely that the election will be over by June 1.
