Rasta roko staged

KURNOOL: The supporters of Anjaneya Swamy temple at Bellary crossroads staged rasta roko to protest against the alleged `highhandedness' of the APSP authorities here on Thursday.

According to protesters, the authorities built a wall and fence close to the temple causing inconvenience to devotees to perform rituals. They said the APSP officials promised to leave some gap between the temple and their shopping complex but behaved highhandedly later.

In fact, the land on which the wall and fence was built did not belong the organisation but to the municipal corporation which had its pipelines.

The protesters held up traffic for some time and planned intensification of the stir.

Policeman dies of sunstroke

CUDDAPAH: A constable attached to the Kalamalla police station, T.M. Satyanarayana Reddy, died of sunstroke on Saturday night. According to the police, the incident occurred when he was going to Kalamalla police station after attending bandobust duties. He was taken to Muddanur Government Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. - Staff Reporter

Head constable hurt in mishap

CUDDAPAH: A head constable of the Cuddapah One Town police station, A. Venkata Subbaiah, sustained a hip bone fracture on being hit by a vehicle in Nagarajupet in Cuddapah town. He was admitted to the Cuddapah Government Hospital and rushed to Hyderabad on doctors' advice, police said. Mr. Subbaiah, who was on a special duty, was walking towards his house, when the mishap occurred. The Cuddapah traffic police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

SUCI condemns Penukonda violence

ANANTAPUR: The district committee of Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) has condemned the violence that broke out while P. Sunita of TDP was filing the nomination for Penukonda by-election on May 13. The district secretary, B.S. Amarnath, condoled the death of six TDP activists and a police ASI in the violence. He alleged that the police had failed to take necessary precautionary measures, while the TDP leaders failed to control their party men. He demanded a judicial probe into the incident and sought ex-gratia to the deceased. - Staff Reporter

House gutted

NELLORE: A thatched house was gutted in Talurpurupadu village of Sangam mandal on Sunday. According to available information, the incident occurred when the inmates were away. Fire tenders from Atmakur controlled the fire. Property worth Rs. 25,000 was destroyed in the fire. - Staff Reporter

Fake currency racket busted

Sangareddy: The police have apprehended a team of eight members involved in printing and circulating fake currency notes.

The Nizamabad range DIG, Anjani Kumar, in press conference at Siddipet on Sunday revealed that 1,090 fake notes (Rs. 1.09 lakhs) were seized from the accused persons.

However, the gang leader Neela Yellam, resident of Japthilingareddypali village of Thoguta mandal is absconding. - Staff Reporter

Scheme for artisans hailed

KARIMNAGAR: The former National Students Union of India (NSUI) State president, Ponnam Prabhakar, has praised the Chief Minister, Y.S Rajashekhar Reddy, for announcing Rajiv Abhyudaya yojana scheme for the upliftment of the artisans belonging to the backward classes community.

Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, he said that the scheme would transform the lives of artisans who come under below the poverty line category. - Staff Reporter

Pulse Polio launched

ADILABAD: The Adilabad District Medical and Health Officer, M. Kesava Rao, on Sunday inaugurated the 17th round of pulse polio immunisation programme in the district by administering polio drops to the children at the Government Primary School in Ponnari village in Tamsi mandal.

He later participated in the immunisation programme at Kbeer, Bhainsa and Tanur mandals. Speaking on the occasion, he said an estimated 385,324 children between the ages of 0-5 years will be immunised during the three-day programme.- Correspondent

Varavara Rao's charges

HYDERABAD: The Citizen's Forum for Democracy, headed by the former Minister, T. Purushottama Rao, has demanded constitution of a fact-finding committee to go into the allegations made by Varavara Rao against Kalyana Rao and Gadar.

Keeping in view of the charge levelled by the former PW leader, K.G. Satyamurthy, against Varavara Rao, it would be better to appoint a committee, said Piratla Venkateswarlu of the forum in a statement on Sunday. . - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC management has issued orders on immediate withdrawal of employees working in `out-off' destination duties and repatriating them to their original duties. While welcoming the orders, the APSRTC Transport Mazdoor Sangh said in a press release that they were issued on Sunday by the Vice-chairman and Managing Director, M.V. Krishna Rao.

in ST list sought

HYDERABAD: The State Boya Hakkula Porata Samiti has demanded inclusion of the Boya community in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

Making the demand at a press conference here Sunday, V. Murali Krishna, State co-convener of the samiti, said Boyas were now being treated as BCs (A category) whereas in Karnataka, Delhi and Punjab they were included in the ST list. - Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the Paritala Ravindra murder case, interrogated Mangali Krishna of Pulivendulu in Cuddapah district, said to be a close follower of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, here on Sunday.

He was in the CBI camp office throughout the day. In the past, he was arrested by the district police in a suitcase bomb case in 2002. - Staff Reporter

Man murdered on

railway platform

CUDDAPAH: A 35-year-old unidentified man was hacked to death on the platform of Rajampet railway station late on Saturday night.

Some unidentified persons chased him on the platform and slashed his throat with knives, causing his instant death, according to the railway police. He reportedly belonged to Gooty in Anantapur district. - Staff Reporter

New scheme to

benefit many

HYDERABAD: The Rs.1,300-crore Rajiv Abhyudaya Yojna, announced by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday will benefit 43 per cent of weaker sections of the population. Ninety-four BC communities will stand to gain.

This was stated here on Sunday by the Congress Legislature Party while thanking Dr. Reddy for making the announcement at the rededication day meeting here yesterday. - Staff Reporter

TDP booklet on

Congress rule

HYDERABAD: The TDP on Sunday released a 50-page booklet on how the Congress Government `deceived' people in its one-year rule.

The booklet focussed the `major failures' of the Government and its `false promises' sector-wise. It was released by party leaders Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, M.V. Mysoora Reddy, Kadiam Srihari and K. Ramamohan Rao.

They told reporters that the `rededication day' of the Government on Saturday could have aptly been described as a `public deception day' as it had failures on all fronts. - Staff Reporter
