NEW DELHI: Air rifle ace Abhinav Bindra, competing in the free rifle events for the first time, failed to qualify for the 50-metre rifle prone event in the ongoing shooting World Cup in Fort Benning, U.S.A. Abhinav shot a 573, following rounds of 97, 94, 97, 98, 96 and 91 while the cut fell at 579. The intensity of the competition could be gleaned from the fact that the gold and silver medals went to world record scores of a perfect 600. Valerian Sauveplane of France took the gold at 703.3 while Eric Uptagrafft of the U.S. won the silver at 702.8 after the final. Abhinav had done well to qualify for the 50-metre free rifle 3-position event though he could not recapture his qualification score of 1161.
