KOLLAM: The Marutimala Samrakshana Samskarika Samithy is organising a people's march to the Maruti hillock at Muttara, near here, on May 21, seeking a total ban on the operation of granite quarries there. In a statement here, the general convener of the samithy, Odanavattom Vijayaprakash, said that if the quarries were not banned, the hillock would be destroyed and it would result in serious environmental problems for Muttara and the neighbouring areas.
Tourist spot
The aim of the march is to highlight the demand for preserving the hillock as a tourist attraction. he decision to take out a march was taken at a convention organised by the samithy on Thursday. The president of the Kottarakara block panchayat, S. Gopalakrishna Pillai, presided over the convention.
Support sought
It called upon all political parties to support the march and urged environmentalists and nature lovers to attend. The Samithy will release a book on the myth and history of the Maruti hillock in June.
