VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has clarified that it has not taken any decision on fixing meters on drinking water taps of consumers if they use electric motors or hand-pumps. In a press release issued here on Sunday, the Chief Engineer of VMC, M.S.P. Dora, said that action would be taken against the consumers who would violate the regulations of VMC on drawal of excess drinking water through taps. As per the VMC bye-law 16(4), no hand pump or electric motors would be allowed on the service tap of the corporation. Mr. Dora observed that the use of electric motors on pipelines was causing low pressure and resulting in denial of enough supply to people in tail-end areas. As some consumers were using motors even during non-supply hours, the supply pipelines were becoming totally empty. When water was released from the reservoir, much time was being taken for the pipelines to get filled up so as to provide supply at consumer end. Mr. Dora reiterated that use of electric motors would not be permitted keeping in view the larger interests of the city population and also proper supply to all.
