Data shows no visible trend in favour of any district

Analysis of the results of entrance tests from 2000 to 2005

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An analysis of the data on the results of the entrance tests conducted for admission to the professional colleges in Kerala, from the year 2000 to 2005, reveals that there have not been any abnormal rise in the number of candidates from any particular district, in the first 1,000 ranks in the medical stream.

The data available with the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations is based on the district of permanent residence of candidates. A closer look at the figures shows that there are fluctuations rather than any visible trends in almost all the districts.

However, in respect of Malappuram, the number of toppers had shown a gradual increase from as early as 1998 itself. If 54 candidates among the first 1,000 rank holders got admission to the medical courses in 1998 from Malappuram district, this number rose to 73 in the following year, which is an increase of over 35 per cent. This was only second to the rise in Palakkad district which had an increase of 45.45 per cent during the same period.

In 2000, the number of candidates figuring in the first 1,000 ranks from Malappuram district is 88. This increased to 95 in 2001, the percentage of increase being 7.95, but came down to 82 in 2002, which was a drop by 13.68 per cent.

In 2003 and 2004, their numbers were 94 and 116 respectively, which came down to 91 in 2005. There is a fall by 21.55 per cent over the previous year. This shows that the numbers have shown marked fluctuations over the years, although it has to be admitted that students of this particular district have been performing better since 1998, as per the data available.

In the case of Thrissur, which has been enjoying the reputation of registering a fairly good result in the entrance tests, there actually has been a regular drop in the number of toppers since 2000. From 139 in 2000 to 91 in 2005, there has been a steady decrease in the number of candidates figuring in the first 1,000 positions in the rank list, which perhaps is more of a trend than a fluctuation.

In the case of candidates from Ernakulam district, the number dropped during 2000-2003 but recovered in the subsequent years.

In the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam too, there is no visible trend as far as the number of candidates figuring in the first 1,000 ranks in the State merit list is concerned.
