NEW DELHI: Transco, the Delhi Government's arm supplying power to private distribution company, is all set for a major overhaul of its system by setting up new sub-stations and laying more supply cables to ensure "reliable'' power supply in the Capital. Transco will be setting up at least 12 new sub-stations and laying six cable lines across Delhi during the next four years, which forms part of its plan to establish world-class power infrastructure before the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Transco, which has been saddled with its old supply infrastructure and frequent breakdown of mechanism, is now in the process of modernising and augmenting its entire system. The laying of new 220 KV power cables and installing 400 KV and 220 KV sub-stations is an integral part of this strategy. For this, Transco has already got clearance from the Central Electricity Authority and is now awaiting the go-ahead from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Expenditure Finance Commission, which is expected soon.
Infrastructure
According to sources in Transco, the 220 KV sub-stations would be set up at Rohini Phase IV and V, Pappankalan-III, Electric Lane, Maharani Bagh and All India Institute of Medical Sciences while the 400 KV sub-station would come up at Mundka. Similarly, the 220 KV cables would be laid between Okhla II and Masjid Moth, Park Street and Nariana, Maharani Bagh and Masjid Moth and Maharani Bagh and Inter-State Bus Terminal at Kashmere Gate, while two cables of 220 KV and 400 KV would be laid between Maharani Bagh and Lodi Road. Stating that it would take around three to four years to build the new infrastructure, sources in Transco said the land for sub-station would be allotted at AIIMS by the New Delhi Municipal Council shortly and for Pappankalan-III has already been selected, while the process for identifying land at other locations would be completed soon. Transco was also looking into other aspects of strengthening power supply in the Capital for which a broad framework was being prepared, they added. The laying of new supply cable, setting up of sub-stations and other infrastructural additions would make power supply in the Capital more reliable besides ensuring smooth switch over of systems during emergency and enhancing the system's load-bearing capacity. When there was a power breakdown today, it takes time to switch over to other sub-station or cable, but with the infrastructure in place, these switchovers and transfer of supply during emergency situations would be fast and smooth, making the power supply network world class.
