CHENNAI: A Community Development Centre has been set up at Mamallapuram by Acts by Mercy, the community welfare wing of the Unwind Centre, to foster rehabilitation programmes for tsunami-affected people. Inaugurating the centre on Saturday, L. Balaji, cricket player, said such centres were necessary to put the past behind and make things better for the community. Rajasekhar, legal advisor, FEFSI, and representatives of coastal villages, Kokillamedu and Uyalikuppam, were also present. The centre would focus on education and offer free classes on spoken English and computer science to students. Many students, who want to pursue professional courses, have already enrolled in the centre. A local resident, Kavitha, would be involved in teaching accounting and computers. A wing of the centre would have a tailoring unit for women. It has tied up with the Kalyani Hospital to provide medical care to residents.
