LUCKNOW: Claiming its model "nikahnama" to be a "social reform" finding wide acceptance in the community, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Sunday dismissed its rejection by the women's body as an attempt to grab media attention. It said there were ``dozens of nikahnamas in the market" and refused to attach any significance to the All-India Muslim Women's Personal Law Board's (AIMWPLB) rejection of the model and decision to draft a separate one. "The AIMPLB model `nikahanama' adopted at its recent Bhopal annual session is finding wide acceptance among the Muslim community and marriages are taking place in accordance with it," spokesman S Q R Iliyasi said. ``Only a handful of people are opposing it in an attempt to gain media attention,'' he said referring to the AIMWPLB's rejection on Saturday of the code of marriage adopted at the Bhopal session. Claiming that the model was appreciated by ``all quarters,'' Mr. Illiyasi said the Board was not a law enforcing body that could punish those violating it. ``Social reforms cannot be achieved through force.'' On the question of Muslim women's rights raised by the AIMWPLB, Mr. Iliyasi said, ``The rights of men and women have been clearly defined... there is no need to define them again as they are already there in the holy Quran and Sharia (Islamic jurisprudence).'' The model had "discouraged'' the practice of uttering `talaq' thrice in a row to annul a marriage. ``We have said that such a `talaq' is a sin and should not be resorted to,'' Mr. Illiyasi said. Senior board member Zafaryab Jilani said, ``there are dozens of `nikahnamas' in the market... the AIMWPLB's new model will also be one of them. PTI
