Nurses to run health care centre soon

Puja S Navin

COIMBATORE: PSG College of Nursing will start a nurse-run health centre by 2006, Jean Abraham, Principal, PSG College of Nursing told The Hindu here recently.

"The centre would focus on health assessment, education and health promotion in rural areas. It would also treat minor ailments and provide referral services," she said.

She said the country was planning a Clinical Nurse Practitioner Course, which would equip a nurse practise independently. "Christian Medical College, Vellore, is working on the course and has submitted a proposal to the Indian Nursing Council," she said.

This course, which would give nurses some prescriptive powers, marks a major step forward the profession.

The role of nurses is often underplayed and their image of being a second fiddle to the doctor is far from reality, says Nirmala T., Associate Professor.

The role has undergone a change from that of being just a caregiver to administrators, educators, counsellors, advocates, nurse managers and also researchers, says Deborah Packiajothi, Assistant Professor.

With India coming up as a hub for medical tourism and opportunities for specialisations and also research, a number of opportunities exist in the country too.

The theme of the International Council of Nursing this year is `Patients Safety: Targeting counterfeit and substandard medicines'.
