Polio drops administered to 2.65 lakh children

TIRUCHI: As many as 2.65 lakh children below the age of five, including 93,000 children in urban and 1.72 lakh children in rural areas, were administered polio drops in 1,470 centres in different parts of the district on Pulse Polio Day on Sunday. While 1,221 centres had been set up in villages, 216 centres functioned within Corporation limits and another 33 centres functioned in Thuraiyur and Manapparai municipal areas.

The Collector, K. Nandakishore, inaugurated the campaign by administering the drops to a few children at the centre at Vaalaadi near Lalgudi on Sunday morning. The Joint Director Of Health Services (in-charge), Vasudevan, was present.

A total of 86,000 children were administered the drops in different parts of the city. The Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, administered the drops to a few children at the urban health post on Nandikoil Street.

According to an official release, special centres were set up at temples in Srirangam, Gunaseelam, Samayapuram, and Vayalur and Rockfort Thayumanaswamy Temple for the benefit of children visiting these temples. Special centres also functioned at all bus stands and railway stations in the district and airport. Drops would be administered to children at these special centres round the clock till Tuesday.

With the coordination of the Railways, polio drops were administered to children travelling in trains proceeding to Manapparai, Karur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur and Chennai from Tiruchi Junction from dawn to dusk.
