NEW DELHI: With the death of one more patient during the past 24-hours, the total number of deaths due to meningococcal meningitis in the Capital touched 23 on Sunday. While three new cases were also reported from different city hospitals, at least 136 patients are undergoing treatment for bacterial meningitis in over two-dozen hospitals across Delhi at present. As many as 138 patients have been discharged after treatment so far. The latest death was reported from Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in North-East Delhi where a 50-year-old woman, Sheela, a resident of Janata Colony, Subhash Park, in Shahdara died of the disease. Three new patients were admitted during the past 24-hours -- one each at GTB Hospital, Kasturba Hospital and Swami Dayanand Hospital. So far, eight people have died in LNJP Hospital, four in Hindu Rao Hospital, three each at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and Sucheta Kripalani Hospital, two in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and one each at Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, GTB Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The highest 27 meningitis patients have been admitted to LNJP Hospital followed by 18 in Safdarjung Hospital, 12 in Hindu Rao Hospital, 11 in RML and 10 in GTB Hospital. According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Director of Hospital Administration, J.N. Banavaliker, the total number of suspected cases of the disease reported so far in the city has reached 300 with the maximum number of cases reported from LNJP Hospital (80), Hindu Rao Hospital (39), Safdarjung Hospital (22), RML Hospital (21) and GTB Hospital (16).
