Release timetable

of bus routes

Sir, — The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) recently took several steps to improve bus services in the city. But it is yet to release a printed schedule of services. It has also not given bus routes.

Most of the bus drivers are also not concerned with passenger comfort. While approaching a bus stop, they must slow down. Instead, they bring the bus to a sudden halt causing discomfort to passengers. It is also seen that some drivers do not slow down at road humps.

I request the BMTC authorities to look into this and ensure that the bus drivers follow the rules.

Defence no longer

a career option

Sir, — The unfair treatment meted out to serving and retired defence personnel, their families and dependents by the Centre and the Karnataka Government, such as the withdrawal of sales tax exemption on CSD (Canteen Stores Department) purchases and imposition of VAT (value added tax), is deterring youngsters from joining the armed forces.

No amount of publicity stunts, such as the "Know your army" programme, can undo the damage. Governments must show genuine respect and concern for Defence forces and restore the perks of the officers.

Good connecting

roads required

Sir, — The residents of RBI Layout and J.P. Nagar 7th Phase are surprised at the apathy of the City Municipal Council, the Bangalore Development Authority and others in ensuring good connecting roads from these areas to the Ring Road and Kanakapura and Bannerghatta roads.

The roads have many potholes. Will the authorities take up work on priority so that roads are repaired before the monsoon?

Urban property tax

Sir, — The property tax self-assessment scheme (SAS) was introduced in Bangalore in April 2001. One of the features of the scheme is that the tax rate is revised once every five years.

A substantial reduction in the tax rate is available to house owners after every five years. Since five years have passed, house owners are entitled to a lower tax rate.

However, revenue officials are insisting that house owners pay the tax as determined five years ago.

As the last date for payment of taxes without interest is May 31, the Government should direct the authorities concerned to collect taxes at the lower rate or extend the deadline till they decide on the issue.

B.S.R. Krishna,
