Staff Reporter
KOCHI: Babu Jacob, advisor to the State Government, is to submit his report on infrastructure development needs of Kochi to the State Government this week. Mr. Jacob plans to take up a study on the possible sources of funding for the proposed projects after submission of the first report. Nearly 150 people, including decision-makers and urban planners, were interviewed as part of preparation of general guidelines for the city's development, Mr. Jacob said. While six legislators from the district held discussions with Mr. Jacob, some others gave their suggestions over phone and a few others in writing. The Mayor, Corporation councillors and chairman of the Greater Cochin Development Authority had also taken part in the discussions, he said. Mr. Jacob is in the process of listing the major proposals made. He hopes to submit the report by Wednesday.
Project proposals
As the report will comprise be a broad view of what is required for Kochi, elaborate steps for converting the feasible suggestions into project proposals will have to be undertaken. Detailed studies would have to be undertaken in certain sectors before formulating project reports, he said. One of the areas in which detailed study is to be carried out is the carrying capacity of water bodies in Kochi. Such a study is essential for life in the city is intrinsically linked to water bodies. Though a general carrying capacity study was conducted some time back, it was not completed, he said. Stress should be laid on completing the carrying capacity study and the development and proper use of water bodies, he said. Other than development of water bodies, the priority areas identified by Mr. Jacob include solid waste and sewage treatment system and improvement of transport infrastructure. Mr. Jacob plans to prepare a report on the sources for funds. Several rounds of discussions have been held with certain funding agencies. A detailed report on this will be submitted to the Government within four weeks of submitting the first report, he said.
