THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The zoo's collection of lion-tailed macaques has gone up by one with the birth of a male on May 13. The baby macaque, born to Bindu, a macaque, is said to be in fine health. The father is Senu, a male brought over from the Vandaloor zoo in Chennai on a `breeding loan' in December, 2003. The zoo is a participant in the coordinated breeding programme for macaques, instituted by the Central Zoo Authority. Bindu had earlier given birth on April 6, 2003, but the baby died immediately afterwards. The second delivery was on March 10, 2004 and the baby primate died six days later. The zoo has eight adult male macaques and three females of which only Bindu has bred successfully. The zoo now plans to effect invitro fertilisation on the other two females.
Lioness dies
On May 14, the zoo lost its oldest lioness, Gowri, which had shot to fame two years earlier when a cataract operation was done on both her eyes. It was for the first time in the zoo that such an operation was carried out on a big cat. The zoo now has five female lions, all in good breeding condition. Efforts are on to bring over a male lion to the zoo.
