THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An elephant, Gopalakishnan, which was hit on its rump by a KSRTC Fast Passenger bus at Karakkamandapam, near here, on the night of April 14, died on Saturday after battling for life for a month. The elephant was returning from the Vellayani temple festival when the accident occurred at around 8.50 p.m. The mahout, Krishnankutty, who was riding the elephant, fell on the road under the impact of the collision. The animal had sustained a gaping wound on its rump and it was passing blood through its urine and faeces. All the efforts by veterinary doctors to rescue the animal failed and its condition deteriorated steadily. The reflectors fixed on the rump of the elephant had been shattered in the collision. Lack of proper street lighting on the stretch and overspeeding on the part of the KSRTC bus driver had resulted in the accident, according to witnesses.
