VIJAYAWADA: Born in 1926 in a farmer's family at Ghantasala village in Divi taluq, M. Subba Rao had his school education at Challapalli and high school education in Municipal High School at Rajahmundry. He belonged to the old generation of high achievers, whose yearning for studies made them pedal their bicycles for long distances. He passed B.Com from Campus College, Andhra University, in 1949 and joined Brahmayya & Co, Chartered Accountants. Between 1951 and 53, he acted as village munsif of Bobbarlanka. Later, Rao obtained FCA and became a partner of M/s Brahmayya & Co. He was president of Tax Bar Association, Vijayawada, in 1973. He served as Chairman of Southern Indian Regional Students' Association of Chartered Accountants and also as the president of Private Engineering Colleges Managements' Association. He also worked as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sri Durga Malleswara Swamivarla Devasthanam for six years. Rao's urge to help meritorious students spurred him to establish Siddhartha Foundation, a philanthropic wing of Siddhartha Academy. Every year, scholarships worth Rs. 20 lakhs are given to 1,000 poor students. Till now, 6,000 students have benefited from this. Rotary International conferred on him the "Service Above Self" award in 1999. He was associated with Rasabharathi, Sangeetha Sadguru Sabha, Andhra Arts Academy, Gudavalli Ramabrahmam Cine Kala Sagar and Andhra Natya Kala Samithi.
