No takers for manure

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: The vermi-compost plant of the Namakkal municipality, operated through an agency appointed on the basis of build, operate and transfer (BOT), is facing problems in marketing the manure.

The enviro-vermi culture plant at the Kosavampatti dump yard here has the capacity to manufacture two tonnes of organic manure per day. But there are no buyers for the 60 - 70 per cent of the manure produced. As a result, the plant lies under-utilised.

Though the awareness among the farmers in the district about organic farming has increased, only a few farmers in the surrounding areas buy manure from the plant.

The Horticulture Department, which has its gardens and research plantations in Kolli Hills in the district and Yercaud in Salem district, is also not supporting the unit.

The municipality is the first to achieve zero garbage level and protects the environment by scientifically disposing the waste.

"The test report of the manure shows it has good composition of minerals required to enrich the soil. If the farmers and others encourage us, the effectiveness of the solid waste management programme of the municipality will remain good and the plant will become the best model to other municipalities in the country," the municipal officials say.

"While the market price of the manure is Rs. 5, we are even ready to sell our produce at a lesser price so as to keep the industry running. The town generates about 8 tonnes of organic waste each day, which is used for composting," the Commissioner of the Municipality, P. Kandhaswamy, said.
