715 criminal cases dropped

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: As many as 715 criminal cases registered by the police in 16 districts in the wake of the agitation by the Congress and the Left parties demanding roll back of the increase in the power tariff by the Telugu Desam regime have been withdrawn.

A Government Order (GO Rt. 623) issued by the Home Department last week sought to justify this decision on the grounds of hardship faced by people due to hike in electricity charges and their genuine demand for withdrawal of the prosecution in such cases where they had no criminal intention in participating in the agitation. The cases have also been withdrawn following representations by political parties. Prominent among those against whom the cases were registered are Asaduddin Owaisi, Jupalli Krishna Rao, Ch. Venkata Reddy and Sabita Indra Reddy during the Telugu Desam regime.
