PATUAKHALI (BANGLADESH): Rescuers searched on Monday for more than 70 persons missing from a ferry that sank in stormy weather in southern Bangladesh, killing at least 32 passengers reportedly after a large wedding party boarded the vessel. The double-deck ferry capsized and sank on Sunday in the mouth of the Bura Gauranga River, said Akthar Shahin, a local reporter at the scene. The ferry went down after it was struck by winds and high waves in Patuakhali district, 150 km south of Dhaka, the area's chief administrator, Mejbah Uddin, told presspersons . Nearly 50 passengers either swam ashore or were rescued by fishing boats. Searchers found 10 more bodies on Monday, raising the confirmed death toll to 32, including six children, Mr. Uddin said. The death toll could be higher because several bodies were taken away by relatives who searched the vast river in wooden fishing boats. More bodies also were feared trapped inside the sunken ferry, Mr. Uddin said.Divers fund the wreckage submerged in 12 to 15 metres of water, but strong currents and falling darkness prevented a salvage ship from lifting it out. The rescue operation would resume early on Tuesday. The Shipping Ministry ordered an investigation into the cause of the capsize. About 70 members of a wedding party had come aboard the ferry just before it went down, Mr. Shahin said. "The ferry became overloaded after the wedding party got into it," Mr. Shahin said. AP
