Palace complex being cleaned

THANJAVUR: In order to preserve heritage buildings, the Thanjavur unit of Indian National Trust for Architectural and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has undertaken cleaning of the palace complex here today.

The palace complex houses Saraswathi Mahal Library, art gallery, living portion of descendants of Maratta kings, arsenal tower, bell tower and Saraja Madi. The Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, inaugurated the work.

Posters pasted on both sides of the entrance were removed; the entrance arch near the fire station close to the palace was cleaned; sand collected from entrance to the art gallery was removed and herbs grown on walls were removed. The Chola icons at the art gallery will also be cleaned.

The Thanjavur Municipality, Departments of Public Works and Tourism, museum workers, volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra and National Service Scheme have taken up the work in association with the INTACH.

Later, the Collector held a meeting and discussed clean maintenance of the palace complex. Tourists would be allowed from art gallery, Saraswathi Mahal Library, Royal Museum, Serfoji Memorial Museum and to Durbar Hall. V.Varadarajan, Rajendran and K. R. Annamalai Chettiar, all INTACH members, Rama Kausalya, Principal, Government Music College, Tiruvaiyaru, Amutha Pandiyan, Rasu Paun Durai, junior prince Shivaji Raja, T. Padmanabhan, Dhandapani, Tourism Officer, and Muthukumar, coordinator of INTACH, participated in the cleaning work.
