No progress in talks

NELLORE: The stalemate connected with release of fishermen, detained by a rival group in Indukurupet mandal of Nellore district, continues to remain unsolved, with the talks not making any progress.

It may be pointed that following a clash between two groups of fishermen, there were instances of kidnaps and seizure of nets.

In view of the surcharged atmosphere, the police entered the scene, but in view of indifference among the parties over the issue of `compensation' the settlement has received a set back. However, the police are continuing their talks.

Temple fete

MADANAPALLE: Srimadvirata Pothuluri Veerabrahmendraswami Aradhana Utsavas are being will be celebrated from May 15 to 19, the trust chairman said.

People are asked to pay Rs. 25 towards abhisekham for one day, for two days Rs. 51, for homam Rs. 51 and for all other services Rs. 116 have to be paid, he added. - Correspondent

Free eye camp

MADANAPALLE: On May 14 Oasis Voluntary Organisation conducted a free eye camp at Vinayaka Public School in Sadum, under the guidance of Ramana Reddy and Karimuddin, doctors. They examined 265 patients and short-listed 150 persons with eye defects.

Free glasses were also distributed. Fifty patients will be operated at Arogyavaram medical centre, said T. Sreenivasa Gupta, Oasis president. - Correspondent

Held on graft charge

HYDERABAD: Two officials of the Roads and Buildings were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau officials after they allegedly took bribes to clear bills with regard to construction of Excise Department quarters in Gudur on Monday.

The Assistant Engineer, O. Gangaiah, and the Head Draughtsman, Z.A. Baig, were trapped when they took Rs. 3,500 and Rs 2,000, respectively from a contractor. - Special Correspondent

Man murdered

ANANTAPUR: Erikala Ramu (25), of Nidigallu village in Tadimarri mandal, was allegedly killed by his rivals near the Ramnagar rail over bridge, here on Monday.

The assailants hit Ramu on the head with a wooden implement killing him on the spot. A love affair was said to be the reason for the murder. - Staff Reporter

Woman killed

ANANTAPUR: Neelavath Kesni Bai (30) was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband, Gopal Naik, and father-in-law, Thirupal Naik, at Eddulavandlapalli thanda in Nallamada mandal of the district, on Monday.

The two were in an inebriated State and were reportedly angry with Kesni Bai for delaying her return from Kerala this year where she goes every year to beg, so as to help the family. - Staff Reporter

Woman's body found

NELLORE: Mystery shrouds over the death of a woman whose body was found on the railway track at Kavali town on Sunday evening.

The bpdy of the woman aged around 30 years bore multiple injuries.

A Rs. 100 note was also found near her body. - Staff Reporter

Teachers seek common service rules

ADILABAD: The United Teachers' Federation (UTF), Adilabad unit, on Monday has asked the Government to announce common service rules for teachers under all managements like Government, Panchayat Raj, municipalities and ITDAs. Any sort of discrimination will force the teachers to resort to agitations, UTF leaders warned. At a press conference here, the UTF district president, Narayan Reddy, and general secretary, Venkat, said the Government proposed bringing out common service rules meant only for the teachers under Government and Panchayat Raj managements. If any discrimination is shown it will dilute the efforts of various teachers unions who had fought for common service rules, they said. Staff Reporter

YSR for Adilabad on May 21

ADILABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will pay a one-day visit to Adilabad town on May 21 to inaugurate a `Rythu Sadassu' here. According to a tentative programme, Dr Reddy is scheduled to arrive by helicopter at the football ground at 12 noon and inaugurate the Sadassu soon after. Later, he will interact with progressive farmers, distribute assets, interact with Gopala Mitra groups and talk to tomato, mango and turmeric growers. This will be followed by a public meeting after which he will fly back at 1.30 pm. Staff Reporter

Training in bamboo craft

ADILABAD: A three-month-long training programme in bamboo craft and bamboo colour dyeing was inaugurated by the in-charge of the district TB control programme, Todsam Chandu, at the Kala Ashram on Monday. Training will be given to around 20 Gond and Kolam youths from tribal areas surrounding Adilabad by master craftsmen, according to Guruji Ravinder Sharma of the Kala Ashram. Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Ten candidates have filed nomination papers for the Penukonda Assembly byelection. Monday was last day for filing papers. Of them, seven are independents and three representing the Congress, the TDP and the BSP. Scrutiny of the papers will be taken up on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

New pontiff presents documents

TIRUPATI: Diwakaramuni Udaseen, newly-appointed mahant (pontiff) of Gangaram Udaseen Mutt in Tirupati, has presented some documents pertaining to the mutt and its landed properties. Chief pontiffs of the mutt, during their recent visit to Tirupati, had anointed Diwakaramuni, earlier known as Diwakar Singh, the mahant of the mutt, which had been headless for some time. At a press conference here on Monday, the journalist-turned-pontiff presented documents dating back to late thirties to prove that his father, Omkardasji, was the mahant at that time. - Staff Reporter

RTC told to drop move on transfers

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Transport Mazdoor Sangh has demanded withdrawal of the proposal of transfer of workers saying it is of "no use either to the corporation or workers at this juncture." In a statement issued here on Monday, M. Nageswara Rao, general secretary, said proposed transfers would not only cause hardship and inconvenience to workers, but also result in heavy and unnecessary expenditure to the RTC. - Staff Reporter

ELURU: Delhi-based International Institute of Education and Management has chosen T.V. Ramakrishna Rao, director, Nova College of Engineering and Technology in Jangareddygudem, for `Jewel of India' award in recognition of his contribution in higher education and research. He received the award at a function held in Delhi recently. Mr. Rao was incharge Vice-Chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University thrice. - Staff Reporter

Suravaram award for Elluri Siva Reddy

HYDERABAD: Elluri Siva Reddy, prominent writer and former head of Telugu Department, Osmania University, has been selected for Suravaram Pratap Reddy Puraskar given annually by the Vyjayanti Trust.

The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.15,000, a memento and a shawl. S.N. Reddy, vice-president of the trust, said in a press release here on Monday that the award would be given at the Andhra Saraswatha Parishath on May 29. - Staff Reporter

2 sportsmen die, 11 hurt in lorry-auto smash

CUDDAPAH: Two softball players of Kurnool district -- Hameed and Mohammed, both 17 years of age -- died on the spot and 10 other sportsmen and an autorickshaw driver sustained injuries in a lorry-autorickshaw smash at Nandipalle D. Agraharam in Brahmamgari Matham mandal late on Monday.

The players and the injured persons were Intermediate students of Lakshmi Junior College in Kurnool, and were returning after participating in a softball competition at St. Joseph's College in Nellore, according to the

police.

Pirated CDs seized,

one arrested

CUDDAPAH: The Chinna Chowk police arrested one Menta Siva Prasad (27) and seized 14 pirated CDs of new Telugu films, five blank CDs and a computer system from his house in Nehrunagar in Chinna Chowk on Monday.

The accused person allegedly procured the pirated CDs from a shop in Bangalore at Rs. 150 each, made several CD copies through a CD writer on his computer and sold them to video shops at Rs. 40 each, the Cuddapah DSP, M. Ramprasad Rao, said at a press conference here. - Staff Reporter
