Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended to parts of K.K. Nagar on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for maintenance work. Supply will be suspended in parts of Pudupet and Foreshore Estate on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bank counter

The Neelankarai branch of Indian Bank opened an extension counter at D.B. Jain College in Thorapakkam on Monday. M.B.N. Rao, chairman and managing director of Indian Bank, inaugurated the counter. Harish L. Mehta, secretary and correspondent of the college, K.B. Nagendra Murthy, general manager, and S. Sridhar, assistant general manager, took part.

Held for murder

City Police have arrested a watchman from Madhavaram on charges of beating a person to death. Madhavaram police said the identity of the deceased was yet to be established. He was about 35. The victim was repeatedly hit with a brick on the head by Jagannathan (46) after a brawl between the two on Sunday night.

Blood donation

Fifty-six units of blood were collected at a camp organised by Lions Club of Madras Velachery on Saturday at Valasaravakkam. At another camp held jointly with Ambatkar Welfare Association in Ayanavaram on Sunday, 81 residents donated blood. The club has so far organised 50 camps since July 2004 and has collected 5,926 units of blood.

Around 250 volunteers of the Art of Living donated blood at five camps conducted simultaneously in different locations in Chennai on Sunday, as part of the birthday celebrations of its founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The blood donated by Art of Living volunteers is expected to benefit nearly 600 persons suffering from various diseases.

The camps were held in Mylapore, T. Nagar, Anna Nagar, Velacheri and Thirunindravoor.

Vasavi jyothi

Students of SKPD Boys Higher Secondary School at Govindappa Naicken Street and women volunteers will carry the vasavi jyothi torch on Wednesday to commemorate the birth anniversary of goddess Knyakaparameswari. Palkodam.

Tickets are available at the Madras district unit of Tamilnadu Arya Vysya Maha Sabha at 164, Govindappa Naicken Street, George Town.

Bonanza for toppers

A windfall is in the offing for youngsters who get the top scores in Plus-Two higher secondary examinations. Only, they should have taken up their studies in Tamil medium.

The vice-president of the Tamil Nadu cine theatre owners association and owner of Rohini theatre complex, R. Pannerselvam, has announced that Tamil medium toppers in Class XII would get a first prize of Rs.50,000, the second topper would get Rs.25,000, and the third ranker Rs.10,000.

The prizes would be given on behalf of the Pannirupadi Ayyan Medical and Education charitable Trust.

Eligible students can apply to the Trust on 43, Sarangapani Street, T.Nagar, Chennai 600 017, says a release.
