New women's hostel to come up in varsity

The building committee of the university is expected to meet in the next couple of days and then the final clearance for new ladies hostel will be obtained from the Syndicate.

MADURAI: A new women's hostel will be constructed in the Madurai Kamaraj University with a financial support of Rs.50 lakhs from the University Grants Commission.

The first instalment of Rs.25 lakhs has already been received and the construction is to begin in a few weeks.

The Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said the new hostel project had to be taken up, owing to the increasing demand for hostel accommodation from girl students joining the university every year.

This would be the fourth hostel for women on the campus.

Dr. Maruthamuthu said several improvements of infrastructure had been planned in the varsity hostels "to make them more attractive and comfortable for the students." The hostel improvement plan had to be taken up, owing to a dip in the room occupancy rate in the university hostels over the past few years.

The building committee of the university was expected to meet in the next couple of days and then the final clearance for new ladies hostel would be obtained from the Syndicate meeting, according to officials.

Already, the Hostel Committee that looked into the functioning of hostels had made several recommendations for improvement of amenities. Authorities said the new hostel had received allocation under the UGC's Tenth Plan.
