P.C. Thomas flays delimitation procedure

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Muvattupuzha MP, P.C. Thomas, has alleged that political lobbies and interest groups have sabotaged the Delimitation Commission's ``decision'' to retain the Muvattupuzha Lok Sabha constituency.

Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Thomas said that a member of the State Cabinet was instrumental in "mutilating" the constituency. The Commission overlooked the principle of delimiting the Parliamentary constituencies from the north. The Commission started the process from the north by allotting seven Assembly constituencies each for every Parliamentary constituency, but it reversed the process midway through and started allotting Assembly constituencies from the south. This led to the abolishing of Muvattupuzha constituency in place of Mavelikara constituency.

If the allocation of Assembly constituencies was followed as per the guidelines, Mavelikara would have been abolished and Muvattupuzha retained. Going by the way the delimitation was implemented, Mr. Thomas feared that Mavelikara constituency which had now been declared a reserved constituency may again become a general constituency. He felt that grave injustice was meted out to the voters of the constituency by abolishing it.
