dated May 18, 1955: Talks on Kashmir

The Kashmir talks between the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan are proceeding satisfactorily in New Delhi and in an extremely friendly and cordial atmosphere. According to informed circles, both sides are determined that the Kashmir problem should not be allowed to bedevil relations between the two countries and feel that even if the talks should be postponed and resumed later, a solution should not be long delayed. The inference drawn by pressmen is that both sides are reluctant to take the press into confidence as premature publicity might upset their calculations and provoke unnecessary hostility. The original programme of the Pakistan Prime Minister to return to Karachi on May 18 morning has been slightly altered and he is now scheduled to leave only in the evening. The two Prime Ministers may meet again on May 18 to finalise the text of a joint communiqué on the talks.
