TIRUNELVELI: As many as 1,985 labourers, including 510 women, of unorganised sector affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) were arrested on Tuesday when they staged road roko at 13 places across the district. The labourers of construction, auto, loading, beedi, handloom industries and the contract workers blocked road at Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Mukkoodal, Veeravanallur, Tenkasi, Shencottah, Kadayanallur, Paavoorchathram, Veerakeralampudhur, Sankarankovil, Sivagiri, Vasudevanallur and Valliyoor. The protestors demanded that the government set up separate welfare boards for each industry and fix and implement the minimum wages for the labourers of unorganised sector. Besides according social security to the workers of unorganised sector, the government should give pension to these workers.
Tuticorin
In the road roko held in Tuticorin district, the police arrested 1,007 protestors, including 196 women, when they blocked road at Tuticorin, Kovilpatti, Srivaikundam and Tiruchendur.
Nagercoil
As many as 3,000 persons owing allegiance to the CITU were arrested in Nagercoil, Thuckalay and Marthandam.
