MADIKERI: Over 12,000 below the poverty line (BPL) and above the poverty line (APL) cards are likely to be added to the existing 1,27,099 in Kodagu district as soon as the re-survey to identify eligible beneficiaries, which began on March 28, concludes. The re-survey is expected to set right the anomalies in the distribution of cards and also add other beneficiaries, besides remove the undeserving cases, the Deputy Director of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies, Kodagu, D. Hombale Gowda, told The Hindu . Of the total number of yellow cards, 73,753 BPL cards and 48,484 APL cards were distributed in Kodagu district. A total of 4,862 Anna Antyodaya cards were provided by the Union Government to beneficiaries in the district, Mr. Gowda said. The income limit for BPL card eligibility in rural areas is Rs. 12,000 a year, while it is Rs. 17,000 in the urban areas. Mr. Gowda denied allegations that personnel conducting re-survey are collecting information from people at the anganwadi centres and gram panchayat offices without visiting individual households. Those in charge of the survey are gathering information by visiting every house, he said. The list finalised by the personnel will be approved in the gram sabha meetings, and if deserving cases have been left out, it will come to the notice of the members during the meetings, said Mr. Gowda. Cases where APL families have been included in the BPL list will also be identified in the gram sabha meetings, he added.
Ration
Kodagu received 7,400 quintals of rice and 1,880 quintals of wheat under the BPL scheme in May to be supplied to beneficiaries at Rs. 3 a kg. A total of 968 quintals of sugar was received in the same period. Under the Anna Antyodaya scheme, a total of 1400 quintals of rice and 350 quintals of wheat were received. While rice was distributed at Rs. 3 a kg, wheat was distributed at Rs. 2 per kg, Mr. Gowda said. The region faced a shortage of items coming under the Public Distribution System (PDS), particularly sugar, some time ago. The non-availability of an agency to transport sugar from Belgaum resulted in the short supply of the same. While such deficiencies have been overcome of late, there are complaints regarding PDS items being diverted to the non-deserving or sold outside in the district. Mr. Gowda warned the 287 PDS outlets in the district to display the price list and ensure correct measurement of the commodities in all the depots by May 31. Those who fail to comply with the order will face action, he said.
Crackdown
The Food Department seized over 40 LPG cylinders from hotels located all over Kodagu in May following complaints of diversion of domestic LPG cylinders to hotels. Mr. Gowda warned against the diversion of LPG cylinders meant for households to hotels and stated that stringent action will be initiated against erring delivery boys and hotel owners in future.
