ERODE: Residents of Gobichettipalayam have demanded that the Erode district administration release water in Bhavani River for supplying water to the Gobichettipalayam municipality and neighbouring panchayats. The River water was released from the Lower Bhavani Project Reservoir that flowed to Kodivery Reservoir. From here it was diverted to Thadapalli and Arakkankottai canals for irrigation of wet crops. But no water was allowed into the River beyond Kodivery. Due to this, industrial waste and sewage flowed into the River. Seepage from the two canals that flowed into the River was pumped by the municipality. This was supplied to the residents after treating, which cost the municipal administration heavily. The residents urged the district administration to order the Public Works Department to release at least 50 cusecs of water into the Bhavani, to be used for drinking.
