Iranian Minister in Baghdad

Atul Aneja

MANAMA: Iran has made its first official high profile contact with the new Iraqi leadership following the arrival of its Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi in Baghdad. Mr. Kharrazi is due for talks with his counterpart Hoshyar Zebari and Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari.

Mr. Kharrazi's arrival, two days after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza paid a surprise visit, is significant, because of the substantial influence which Teheran exercises over Iraq's new rulers. Mr. Jaafari, who belongs to the Al Dawa party, spent several years in Iran when former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was at the helm in Baghdad.

Leaders of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution of Iraq — a core constituent of the new Shia-dominated Government had also taken refuge in neighbouring Iran.

"We have a range of issues on both sides, including non-interference, cooperation, the economy and closing the files of the Iraq-Iran war," Mr. Zebari was earlier quoted as saying.
