MELBOURNE: The third-seeded Indian boys defeated Malaysia and Indonesia to stay in the race to top the group in the Asia-Oceania World junior under-14 tennis championship here. Yuki Bhambri and company will next take on the sixth-seeded Japan to decide the group topper. The Indian girls, however, lost 0-3 to sixth-seeded Thailand but managed to humble fourth-seeded Korea 2-1.
The top two teams in the four groups, boys' and girls' sections, will make it to the knockout stage in the race for the World Group berths.
The results:
Boys: India beat Malaysia 3-0 (Yuki Bhambri bt John Tay Whei Erhn 6-0, 6-0; Christopher Marcus bt Ooi Gim Hong 6-3, 6-4; Mansing Athare & Christopher Marcus bt Ooi Gim Hong and Wong Wein Jun 6-4, 6-3).
India beat Indonesia 2-1 (Yuki Bhambri bt Tito Hutahurek 6-4, 6-3; Christopher Marcus bt Rihal Athak 2-6, 6-3, 6-2; Yuki Bhambri & Christopher Marcus lost to Tito Hutahurek & Sony Purnomo 2-6, 7-5, 3-6).
Girls: India beat Korea 2-1 (Janaki Rao bt So Yeon Kim 6-4, 6-2; Sweta Solanki bt Ju-Eun Kim 6-4, 4-6, 6-0; Janaki Rao & Prerna Mythri lost to Yun Hee Kim & So Yeon Kim 6-4, 3-6, 2-6).
Thailand beat India 3-0 (Nicha Lertpitaksinchai bt Janaki Rao 6-3, 6-4; Noppawan Lertcheewakarn bt Sweta Solanki 6-2, 6-1; Nicha Lertpitaksinchai & Satjaporn Mahajaroen bt Sweta Solanki & Prerna Mythri 6-4, 6-3).
