CNC agitation

Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) will launch a six-day agitation here in support of its demands on Wednesday, N.U. Nachappa, secretary-general of the CNC, said here on Tuesday. Mr. Nachappa said that the CNC's demand is that the Centre and the State governments should consider the Kodava community as a primitive tribal group and provide reservation. — Staff Correspondent

Convention campaign

MANGALORE: The publicity campaign for the Convention of Tipu Sultan will be launched here on Wednesday. The convention will start on May 26.

According to a press release from the general-secretary, Ummer U.H., the convention organised by the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (Karnataka Communal Harmony Forum) aims at achieving communal harmony through the ideals of Tipu Sultan.

Awareness processions will be taken out in major towns of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts till May 26, Mr. Ummer added. — Staff Correspondent

Water project

Madikeri: The Government has approved a Rs. 4.70-crore drinking water project covering 12 villages in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu — from Mullusoge to Shirangala — the Chairperson of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), K.P. Chandrakala, said here on Tuesday. Ms. Chandrakala, who produced a copy of the approval letter released by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, told presspersons that Rs. 2.04 crores has already been released by the department to the board. — Staff Correspondent

KSOU exam

Bidar: The Karnataka State Open University annual examinations for B.A. and B.Com. students will begin from Wednesday. Examinations for students of Self Instruction Mode (SIM) and non-SIM courses of MA and M.Com. first year will also begin on Wednesday. Examinations for final year MA and M.Com. students will begin on June 2. Details can be had from the Regional Director, Kamble Ashok (9880115714, 08472-265868).

Devanga Sangha chief

Bangalore: L.R. Ananth , Chairman of the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation and Congress leader, is the new President of the Akhila Karnataka Devanga Sangha. Mr. Ananth was till now the General Secretary of the Sangha. He has been authorised to constitute the State Executive Committee of the sangha and other cells, according to a press release.

Law against child marriages

BIJAPUR: The Ujwala Rural Development Service Society, a non-governmental organisation working for the betterment of children and women, has urged the Union Government to enact a law against child marriage. In a letter to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, copies of which were released to the press, the project director of the organisation, Vasudev Tolbandi, said the attack on Shakuntala Verma has once again highlighted the need for a law. He stressed the need to take up intensive campaigning in States where the practice is prevalent.

Rasta roko

Bidar: Residents of Eden Colony have threatened to stage a rasta roko on Friday if the State Government does not start work on providing basic facilities by then. The residents in a press release said that though the authorities of the municipality promised to provide facilities, nothing has been done so far. The commissioner of the municipality, Tippesh, reportedly assured them that development work will begin soon. — Staff Correspondent

Three killed

CHITRADURGA: Three persons were killed and four severely injured in a collision between a truck and a multi-utility vehicle in Chitradurga rural limits on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased have been identified as Ramgopal Cheraniya of Toranagallu, Basha (50) and Veeranna (35) of Bellary. The injured are being treated at the district hospital. Review meeting

Bidar: Surekha Lambtore, member of the National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission, will review the progress of social welfare schemes in Bidar district on Thursday. She will arrive from Hyderabad in the morning and hold a meeting with the heads of development and regulatory departments. She will leave for Gulbarga on the same day. — Staff Correspondent

`Crorepati'

Bidar: The Life Insurance Corporation of India has conferred the title of "Crorepati" on Suryakant Biradar of Bidar for crossing a business target of Rs. 1 crore in 2004-05. SIRSI: The writer Raghavendra Bettakoppa has bagged the late G.S. Hegde Ajjibal Endowment Award for 2002 and 2003.

The award has been instituted by the Uttara Kannada District Journalists' Association, Sirsi.

SIRSI: The writer Raghavendra Bettakoppa has bagged the late G.S. Hegde Ajjibal Endowment Award for 2002 and 2003. The award has been instituted by the Uttara Kannada District Journalists' Association, Sirsi.

Birth centenary

HUBLI: Mahila Vidyapeetha, Hubli, has decided to celebrate the birth centenary of its founder, Nagamma Patil, in December.

The 70th anniversary of the establishment of the vidyapeetha will also be celebrated, said a press release. The vidyapeetha plans to set up an alumni association and has requested old students to send their details to the vidyapeetha. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

HUBLI: One person was killed in an accident on Sunday night near Anchatageri here. The police said Abdulsab Mulla (25), a resident of Bengeri, died when his motorcycle crashed into a stationary lorry. Hubli Rural Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Officials warned

DHARWAD: The Deputy Commissioner, Gourav Gupta, has warned officials against showing any laxity in executing drinking water schemes.

A press release issued here said Mr. Gupta was speaking at a meeting held here on Tuesday to review the drinking water situation in the district. He directed the tahsildar and the Executive Officers of taluk panchayats to pass bills only after schemes are executed.

The meeting was informed that the State Government has sanctioned Rs. 3.04 crores for easing the water crisis in the district, including Rs. 1.60 crores for the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. — Staff Correspondent

Meet on plastics and environment

MYSORE: The Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) and Hebbal Industrialists Association (HIA) are organising an "Industry-Institute interaction meet on plastics and environment" at 6.30 pm on May 20 at Hotel Royal Inn in the city.

The Mayor, Dakshina Murthy, will inaugurate the programme. The Commissioner of Mysore City Corporation, A.B. Ibrahim, will be the chief guest. The Director General of CIPET, Sushil K. Varma, will speak on "Plastics and environment." The meet will be presided by the HIA President, P. Vishwanath, a press statement said.

Two birds adopted from zoo

MYSORE: Two children have adopted two small birds from the Mysore zoo for a year under the "Adoption of animals" scheme of the zoo. According to a press statement from the Executive Director of the zoo, Kshama V. Desai and Varun V. Desai have adopted the birds from May 13 by paying Rs. 500 each as adoption charges.

Free cancer detection clinic

MYSORE: A free cancer detection clinic will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre on M.G. Road at Lakshmipuram in the city from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 19. According to a press statement from the centre, Chief Surgical Oncologist, Anil Thomas, will examine patients.

Urdu book fair

till Sunday

Bangalore: The second "All-India Islamic and Urdu book fair," being organised by Bookware at Al-Ameen School, will end on Sunday. Besides Urdu books, those in English, Kannada, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, and cassettes, CDs and artefacts are on display. The organisers say 50,000 titles dealing with Islam and contemporary issues such as women's rights and secularism are available. The exhibition is drawing large crowds, they add.

Institution declared heritage centre

Bidar: The Government has declared the Anatha Pindaka Buddha Vihara on the Rekulagi Mount on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway in Humnabad taluk as a heritage tourist centre. The Tourism Minister, D.T. Jayakumar, has released Rs. 12.2 lakhs for providing drinking water and other facilities at the mount, Bhikku Maha Kashyap Mahathero, head of the Buddhist institution, said in a release. Buddha Poornima will be celebrated at the vihara on Monday. Experts will deliver talks on the life and work of the Buddha.

Insurance scheme

for shepherds

Bidar: The Government has introduced a scheme to insure the lives of shepherds and their flock, the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Mirajuddin Patel, said on Monday. Under the scheme, a sheep-rearing family will get Rs. 50,000 on the unnatural death of its breadwinner and Rs. 15,000 on the death of a sheep. Mr. Patel was speaking at a programme for women from poor families at Shekhapur in Bidar taluk.

Awareness campaign for the disabled

Bangalore: The Akhila Karnataka Angavikalara Horata Samiti will launch an awareness campaign for the physically challenged. Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal districts are likely to be selected for the campaign. The organisation works to create awareness among the disabled about their rights and duties. It will also be an exercise to make them self-confident, according to the samiti. The demands of the organisation include free bus passes for the disabled. — Staff Reporter

Grants to drama companies

BIJAPUR: The president of Karnataka Nataka Academy, Shrinivas Kappanna, said here on Tuesday that the academy pans to provide annual grants ranging from Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 50,000 to professional drama companies. Besides, Rs. 30,000 each will be given to companies to promote a new play of good quality. Addressing a press conference, he said there are 24 professional drama companies in the State, and they have been categorised into three groups. Referring to vulgar dialogue and obscenity in plays, he said a watchdog committee will be set up. — Staff Correspondent

BANGALORE: The results of the examinations of the third-year Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, offered by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, has been released.
