UNIQUE RIDE: Aleem on his new bike Photo: G. R. N. Somashekar
BANGALORE: Ever wanted a motorcycle so small that you could carry it on your back? If yes, your dream has come true. Syed Aleem (28), a mechanic here, has designed and created such a mini-bike. The 12-inch-high bike weighs only around 20 kg. Designed for a maximum speed of 40 km an hour, it comes with a two-litre petrol tank. "The bike gives a mileage of around 50 km a litre," says Aleem. Ask why he chose to design such a bike and he says: "It is to enable young children to enjoy the pleasure of riding a motorcycle instead of a bicycle. Children can ride it in gardens or near their houses, or even take the motorcycle while going on a picnic." The mini-bike will add value to a family outing as "children will enjoy it." Aleem became a mechanic at the age of 13 and has been converting motorcycles to suit the needs of racers. He owns an automobile garage, Five Star Motors, at Wilson Gardens here. The mini-bike, which has a Luna engine, cost around Rs. 3,500 to build. "That is excluding my labour charges," he says. He spent more than a month in designing and building it. Aleem, who has studied only till the 6th standard, is considering patenting his invention. But the bike is not fully ready yet. "I am in the process of making it look more attractive," he says.
