Lalu must go: AIFB, RSP

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, against whom charges were framed by a Ranchi court in a fodder scam case.

The AIFB general secretary, Debabrata Biswas, said it was his party's considered view that Mr. Prasad should step down and clear himself of the charges. But he added that it was for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to decide.

`Resignation will enhance prestige'

RSP MP and Central Committee member Abani Roy said any Minister, MP or MLA, who has been charge-sheeted or against whom charges were framed in a court should resign as it would ``enhance the prestige'' of the person and the party.

However, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the CPI said the parties would discuss the issue and take a view.

The CPI general secretary, A.B. Bardhan said the matter figured at the Left parties coordination meeting on Tuesday following the demand by the AIFB and the RSP.

The CPI (M) general secretary, Prakash Karat, said the party heard about the development at the meeting and would take a view in due course.

The AIFB/RSP decision comes on the eve of the United Progressive Alliance-Left parties meeting on Wednesday. However, Mr. Biswas said that his party would not raise the issue at the meeting, as the Left, as a whole, has not taken any stand.
