Two convicted in murder case

TIRUCHI: A Fast Track Court on Tuesday convicted two persons in the Venkatesan murder case. While one of the accused, Thavasi, was sentenced to life imprisonment, Arun, cited as the fifth accused, was awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment. They were also fined Rs. 1,000 each.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Jonathan Gnanaiah, however, acquitted six persons, Bhakthiraj, Damodaran, Raja, Rajaprabhu, Veeramani and Vasanth, who were arrested in connection with the case.

Venkatesan, a medical distributor and son-in-law of retired Madras High Court Judge A. Raman, was shot by Thavasi at his house in Seshadripuram on October 22, 2003. Arun, who also had a pistol, was present with Thavasi. Venkatesan died of injuries in a private hospital in Chennai on November 15, 2003. Police arrested six persons, including Thavasi and Arun in February 2004.
