CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K.Vasan, has described the victory of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the two Assembly byelections as an interim victory, achieved through money, muscle power and misuse of official machinery. Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, Mr. Vasan said that voters knew well how the AIADMK had managed to win the previous byelections in the State. So its recent victory would not in any way affect the prospects of the Democratic Progressive Alliance in the coming Assembly elections. The past year's achievements of the United Progressive Alliance led by the Congress would form the foundation for the DPA's victory in the Assembly polls. Mr. Vasan ruled out the possibility of any split in the alliance and added that the existing alliance would continue for the Assembly elections also. The Puthiya Tamizhagam president, K. Krishnasamy, said the result had dispelled the myth that the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) had a vote bank in the northern districts. He asked whether the Opposition parties, which demanded the resignation of the AIADMK Government immediately after the Lok Sabha elections, would ask the MPs of these two Assembly constituencies to resign owning moral responsibility for the defeat.
