Free medical camp

Thanjavur: A free medical camp was held at Sengipatti on May 15 under the auspices of the Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women.

Hundreds of handicapped persons were examined and steps had been taken to provide relief. Free eye camps were organised by Joseph Eye Hospital and District Blindness Control Society. A dental camp was also held.

Dr. N. Ramachandran, Principal, Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, presided. R. Kamaraj, Chairman of Budalur Panchayat Union participated in the camp. — Staff Reporter

`Drink boiled water'

KARUR: Municipal officials have urged the residents to exercise caution in consuming water since an NGO had found that potable water available in most of the areas in the municipal limit is polluted. The `findings' of the NGO `Sudar' revealed recently found an echo in the municipal council meeting held here today with some members seeking actual status of the drinking water available in the town and whether the civic body was taking any precautionary steps to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Officials, who conceded that water was far from pure, urged the people to avoid using borewell water for drinking purpose and consume water being supplied by the Municipality after boiling.

Economic census

NAGAPATTINAM: A month-long economic census began in this district on Sunday, said J.Radhakrishnan, Collector, on Tuesday.

The Collector, who is the Deputy Commissioner of this survey, said that statistics of houses, huts, establishments, industries, banks, petty shops, hotels and other unorganised sectors would be collected. He said that 911 persons (607 enumerators and 304 supervisors) were drafted for the work. Nearly 450 unemployed graduates and 157 teachers were among the enumerators and supervisors.

Elected

Thanjavur: N. T. Balasundaram has been elected as new chairman of Thanjavur unit of Builders Association of India for 2005-2006. He will take charge at a function to be held here on May 22. S.Rajendran is taking charge as vice-chairman, S.Prabhu as secretary, Wesly Arul as joint secretary and M.Ayyappan as treasurer, said a press release issued here today. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 52.51 feet today. The inflow was 818 cusecs and the discharge 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

SSLC-passed students to get registered

TIRUNELVELI: The District Employment Office has made elaborate arrangements to register the names of the candidates who pass the SSLC examination 2005.

According to the District Employment Officer, M. Shanmugasundaram, a special camp for registering the SSLC students would be conducted at Shencottah, Ambasamudram, Puliyangudi, Sankarankovil, Panagudi and Kalakkad on Saturday.

For candidates from Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, the registration would be done at the District Employment Office on working days. Students should bring with them their original educational certificates, transfer certificate, community certificate and attested xerox copy of the ration card. — Staff Reporter

Watchman run over

TIRUNELVELI: The watchman of a private firm, R. Franklin (48) of Mattakkadai, was fatally knocked down by a lorry carrying components for Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project on Tuesday. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed.

The police arrested the cleaner of the lorry T. Ganesan (45), who drove the vehicle when the accident occurred. — Staff Reporter

Man commits suicide

TIRUNELVELI: A village assistant committed suicide on Tuesday over a domestic quarrel. Police said K. Paramasivan (37) of Puthur had a quarrel with his wife, Ramalakshmi (32), on Monday night. — Staff Reporter

1,600 workers held

ERODE: Over 1,600 members of CITU were arrested on Tuesday when they attempted to picket the Collectorate. They demanded that the Government streamline employees of unorganised sectors, Agricultural Labourers Welfare Boards and grant bonus to construction workers. The police arrested 850 members including women with children, here. Deputy General Secretary, P. Marimuthu, led the rally. They were detained at a wedding hall and released in the evening. Similarly rallies were held in Perundurai and Bhavani where about 750 workers were arrested. - Staff Reporter

Arrested

Dharmapuri: As many as 62 persons, including 26 women, were brewing arrack were arrested in a raid by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel in the district on Monday. The police said that in the raid held in Dharmapuri and surrounding areas, 1,845 litres of illicit arrack and 10,025 litres of fermented wash were destroyed. - Staff Reporter

Electoral draft list

Dharmapuri: The Minister for Information, Publicity and Local Administration and the district secretary of the AIADMK, K.P. Anbazhagan, has appealed to party functionaries to go through the electoral draft list and verify the list.

In a release he said that special camps would be conducted on May 21 and 22 in polling booths for name inclusion and deletion. - Staff Reporter

AIADMK to back JD(S) in Karnataka bypolls

CHENNAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said her party would extend support to the Janata Dal (S) in the byelections to the Shimoga Lok Sabha seat and the Chamrajpet Assembly seat.

In a statement here, she appealed to the AIADMK activists in Karnataka to extend their full cooperation to the candidates of the Janata Dal (S) headed by H.D. Deve Gowda, in the byelections slated for June 2. — Special Correspondent

Entrance test schedule

CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET)-2005 for MBA, MCA, ME, M.Tech, M.Arch. and M. Plan will be conducted on May 21 and 22. Anna University's Centre for Entrance Examinations (CEE) said the enquiry office would function at the CEE here between 9 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on May 19 and 20, and in five towns on May 20, says a release.

It will also function in the National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College), Tiruchi-15; the Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Tirupparankundram, Madurai-15; the Government College of Engineering, Salem-11; the Government College of Technology, Thadagam Road, Coimbatore-13; and the Government College of Engineering, Perumalpuram, Tirunelveli-7.

As hall tickets have already been despatched, new ones will not be issued. The candidates who have lost, misplaced or not received them should report to the enquiry office.

The following is the schedule:

May 21, 10 a.m. to 12 noon — MBA;

May 21, 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. — MCA;

and May 22, 10 a.m. to 12 noon — ME/M.Tech/M/Arch/M.Plan.

ISO certification

CHENNAI: The Pension Group of the Office of the Accountant-General (Accounts and Establishments), Tamil Nadu, has been awarded IS/ISO 9001:2000 certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

The certification has been granted for complying with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System and continuing to improve its effectiveness and serving the pensioners with utmost regard, adopting a positive and humane approach in finalising the pension cases, says a release issued by the AG's office here. — Special Correspondent
