Shortage of power likely next year

Rajesh Nair

Deficit of 17 MW expected during 2006-07

Total allocation of power from Central generating stations: 271.23 MW Availability from other State Electricity Boards/PPCL: 112.73 MW Total power allocation/availability: 383.96 MW

PONDICHERRY: Though the power position in Pondicherry is comfortable for the current year, there will be an estimated deficit of around 17 mega watts (MW) during 2006-07.

According to the projections by the Electricity Department, the anticipated demand for the year 2006-07 will be 358.24 MW, whereas the total availability from Central Generating Stations and other States is 341.31 MW.

In the current year, the Union Territory has a surplus of 0.13 MW. The projected demand for the year is 341.18 MW and the total availability is 341.31 MW.

The annual increase in the energy consumption has been put at 4.62 to 5 per cent. It is also estimated that during summer the consumption will be 20 to 30 per cent higher, sources in the Electricity Department told The Hindu.

To tide over the deficit the administration has requested the Centre to allocate additional power supply during the next year. A major part of the energy needs of the Union Territory is met through Central allocation especially for its two regions- Pondicherry and Yanam.

Sources said the small power-generating unit in Karaikal region run by the Pondicherry Power Corporation caters to a part of the region and for the other part the government was buying it from Tamil Nadu.

For Mahe, the power supply is managed through supplies from Kerala.

Taking into consideration the growing demand, the government was planning to increase the production capacity of the power-generating unit in Karaikal, the sources said.
