Sunil Kumar in doubles semifinals

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Sunil Kumar made it to the doubles semifinals of the $25,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Fergana, Uzbekistan, with Dmitri Sitak of Russia, as his opponents Sarvar Ikramov and Akmal Sharipov of Uzbekistan were defaulted when the Indo-Russian pair led 3-6, 6-1, 5-4 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Indo-Russian pair, that had earlier accounted for Sergei Krotiouk and Alexander Markin of Russia 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, will challenge top-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei and Danai Udomchoke of Thailand in the next round.

However, Sunil lost in the second round of singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to Evgueni Smirnov of Russia, after beating Sergey Kwak of Uzbekistan 6-2, 6-4.

The other Indian in the fray Karan Rastogi could not retain his fine form that had seen him reach the semifinals of the Futures tournament last week in Andijan, and lost 1-6, 3-6 to qualifier Raven Klaasen of South Africa in the first round.
