Concern over development project for Guruvayur

Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: The Guruvayur Municipal Council has decided to communicate to the Government the council members' apprehensions on the proposed move to evolve a development plan for the temple town, at the behest of the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy.

At a meeting of the council on Monday, the ruling LDF members argued that the municipality had already taken steps to evolve a master plan for Guruvayur and had sought the permission of the Government to give the money for it to its own Planning Department.

But the Chief Minister, at his recent meeting in Guruvayur, unilaterally announced the decision to evolve a master plan for the town, without really bothering to find out what were the steps taken by the municipality in this regard, the municipality chairperson, Mercy Joy said.On the waste treatment plant, the ruling council members were also apprehensive of the move of the Government to entrust the work to the same group, which had installed a defunct plant at Guruvayur.

The council members also expressed fears that as a consequence of the meeting convened by the Chief Minister, the devaswom might deny the municipality the arrears that it (the devaswom) has to pay for maintaining sanitary operations and waste removal in the temple town.

The Opposition UDF members, however, argued that the municipal office-bearers should have raised such issues at the meeting of the Chief Mzinister.
