THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has approved the selection of directors to the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) and the Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), two of the major scientific institutions in the State. While the sitting director of CESS, M. Baba, will retain his post, TBGRI will be headed by S. Ganeshan, Principal Scientist at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore. The two directors were selected from a list of candidates after a screening process, which culminated in an interview last Thursday. The interview board was headed by the former Indian Space Research Organisation chairman, U.R. Rao. The Chief Minister who presides over the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) is learnt to have approved the selection. The Chief Minister's Office confirmed that the approved panel had been returned to the council for procedural formalities before appointment. Meanwhile, the interview for selection of a director to head the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) has been put on hold following the resignation of the research council chairman, N.S. Sreenivasan. The interview was postponed at the eleventh hour after Mr. Sreenivasan announced his decision to quit. The founder director of NATPAC, Mr. Sreenivasan is a member on the interview board. Though Mr. Sreenivasan had cited personal reasons for his resignation, official sources said his decision might have been triggered by difference of opinion in short-listing candidates. The executive vice-president of the KSCSTE, A.E. Muthunayagam, said approved procedures were followed for processing the applications and short-listing five of the 16 candidates. He said the decision to postpone the interview was taken after consultation with S.M. Vijayanand, the Government representative on the board. "I have communicated our decision to the Chief Minister," he said. Mr. Muthunayagam said the NATPAC interview would be held after ascertaining the qualifications of the short-listed candidates. "Simultaneously, we have taken steps to reconstitute the NATPAC Research Council and seek more candidates for the post," he said.
