HYDERABAD: All cases booked by the police up to May 14, 2004, in connection with agitations by farmers, students and other sections of people against power tariff hike, low voltage, RTC fare increase, spurious seed and fertilizers, and for scrapping of school/college fee and release of scholarships will be immediately withdrawn, the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said on Tuesday. Also, the 397 cases filed against villagers and others for offences like providing food to naxalites and against naxalite sympathisers would be scrapped. The Home Minister said the blanket withdrawal of cases was decided by the Government keeping in view the harassment faced by the affected families who were forced to go to court frequently and face police questioning. The decision would also cover cases under investigation and those for which trial was pending.
Not so serious: Jana
Mr. Jana Reddy told The Hindu that all these cases were not of serious nature and numbered about 4,000. Asked if the decision was taken at the instance of the CPI and CPI (M), he said the cases were withdrawn "in the interests of the poor." The Minister has instructed the DGP and the SPs to collect details of all these cases.
