Ryots' convention on May 29, 30

KURNOOL: A farmers' convention was planned here on May 29 and 30 after completion of the Raithu Chaitanya Yatra in the district. The Joint Collector, Ramsankar Naik, reviewed the arrangements for the convention here on Monday. He said farmers should be oriented to absorb the impact of the globalisation. Besides exhibition and stalls of latest farm equipment, scientists would be made available to clarify the doubts of the farmers. Farmers would be provided free transport and food. - Staff Reporter

Red sanders seized

NELLORE: The authorities in Venkatagiri town have seized red sanders worth Rs. 60,000 on Wednesday, kept ready for transport. On reliable information, the police combed the nearby forest areas and seized the material. In recent times, there has been a spurt in such activities in and around Venaktagiri town. Tobacco growers told to register names

NELLORE: Tobacco farmers around DC Palli area have been asked to register their names at the auction centre for the purpose of receiving fertilizers. Each registered farmer would receive eight bags of potash, 17 bags of ammonium sulphate and 26 bags of super phosphate, per barn, for which an amount of Rs. 1,250 would be deducted from the sale of tobacco. - Staff Reporter

Fatally knocked down by train

NELLORE: An autorickshaw driver was fatally knocked down by a train when he was crossing the tracks at Sullurpet on Tuesday. At Venkatagiri, Radhakrishna, a passenger, who was injured when the autorickshaw in which he was travelling overturned, later succumbed to the injuries at Tirupati. - Staff Reporter

Excise Inspector commits suicide

KURNOOL: An Excise Inspector, Hanumanthappa (53), committed suicide by hanging himself under mysterious conditions at Atmakur on Tuesday. According to reports, the officer who hailed from Hindupur in Anantapur district was posted to the town a year ago and was living alone. He was believed to have been suspended recently for failure to contain the prices of liquor. The postman who went to his place found the body hanging from a ceiling fan. Earlier, the staff visited the place and supplied breakfast to him. - Staff Reporter

BUMS entrance test on June 12

VIJAYAWADA: NTR University of Health Sciences will conduct an entrance test on June 12 for admission into the Bachelor of Unani Medical Sciences (BUMS) course. The venue for the test is Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad. In a press release issued here on Tuesday, the university Registrar, P. Jayakar Babu, said candidates should have passed Intermediate or any other equivalent examination. The last date for submitting applications is June 4. Application forms can be obtained from Government Nizamia Tibbi College, Charminar; Dr. Abdul Haq Unani Medical College, Park Road, Kurnool; NTR University of Health Sciences camp office, DME Buildings, Koti; and Registrar, NTR University of Health Sciences. - Staff Reporter

124 TDP workers held responsible for violence

ANANTAPUR: The police have identified 124 activists of the TDP responsible for the violence at Penukonda on May 13. Of them, 11 have been arrested and they are in judicial remand. Talking to newspersons here on Tuesday, R.S. Praveen Kumar, SP, allayed fears that TDP workers would be victimised. Cases were being booked with evidence available in the form of videotapes recorded by news channels and other officials present at the scene. - Staff Reporter

Complete Dharmavaram canal work: CPI(M)

HYDERABAD: The CPI(M) has urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to ensure completion of Dharmavaram canal in Anantapur district to mitigate hardships of people in the town and surrounding areas. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Koratala Satyanarayana, Central Committee member, who recently visited Dharmavaram, said the canal work was taken up in 1978 but had not been completed so far. - Staff Reporter

VSP compensation

VISAKHAPATNAM: The North Andhra Fishermen Youth Welfare Association has asked Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) to follow the Supreme Court judgment on the Narmada project issue and provide employment and help to fishermen who were displaced due to construction of the steel plant.

Association members organised a dharna in front of the office of the Land Acquisition Officer here on Tuesday demanding jobs and help to displaced persons, most of them fishermen. - Special Correspondent

Thousands of pilgrims witness divine fete

TIRUMALA: Thousands of pilgrims witnessed the annual Padmavati Pariyanotsavam amid religious fervour at Tirumala on Tuesday.

The bejewelled deities of the Lord and His two Consorts -- Sridevi and Bhudevi-- were taken in colourful procession on `Gaja vahanam' to Narayanagiri gardens where the ritual was performed amid chanting of verses from scriptures and from Dravida Prabandhams. The three-day fete concludes on Thursday. - Special Correspondent
