NEW DELHI: Social activists from various organisations on Monday demanded that Mohammad Ahsan Untoo, who was arrested more than two months ago for allegedly passing on sensitive information about the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence, be immediately released. They claimed that Kashmiris were "victim of communalism." An application has also been filed on behalf of Ahsan Untoo before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Delhi. According to the application, Ahsan Untoo, a human rights activist, had come to Delhi on personal work and also to file cases before the National Human Rights Commission. He was picked up by police and brutally tortured and sodomised. He was compelled to sign on blank pieces of paper. "He has told us that he was picked up by the police on February 9. But the FIR against him has only been lodged on February 12. Why this gap? And he was tortured and sodomised. He has injury marks and needs immediate medical attention. His friend, Ghulam Nabi Najar, was also picked up in Srinagar on the same charge," his lawyer, N.D. Pancholi, said at a press conference here on Monday. News agencies had quoted different places and dates regarding Ahsan Untoo's arrest, said Nandita Haksar, lawyer and member of the All-India Defence Committee for Syed Abdul Rehman Geelani. "Ahsan Untoo managed to smuggle a letter to us, telling us about the entire case. This is a case of human rights violation. He says that he needs immediate medical assistance and that there is a threat to his life. Also, he has demanded that an inquiry be conducted <243>against those who have tortured him." President of the Jammu and Kashmir Trade Union Centre Sampat Prakash said: "He is a well-known social activist. This is a violation of human rights. He has been brutally tortured and is in Tihar Jail even now. Kashmiris are not safe. In J&K, the policy of the police is catch and kill, here in Delhi, it is to catch and frame."
