JAIPUR: A sum of Rs. 31.94 crores has been spent in Rajasthan on implementation of the reproductive and child health care programme with the objective of reducing the maternal and infant mortality rates and bringing about population stabilisation. The programme also aims at improving the quality of health and family welfare services in all the districts. The State Medical and Health Minister, Digambar Singh, said here that as many as 74 operation theatres and 91 labour rooms has been constructed under the programme at a cost of Rs. 7.21 crores, while the construction of smaller structures with the provision of electricity and water supply was taken up at a cost of Rs. 3.08 crores. Round-the-clock delivery facility is now available at 1,178 primary health centres and 194 community health centres across the State with an expenditure of Rs. 2.53 crores having been incurred on providing the services there. Significantly, 84,826 deliveries in the night were performed at these centres. Dr. Singh said more than 3,400 women from the backward and weaker sections were given the benefit of referral transport for delivery from the health sub-centres situated in the far-flung areas. While the service was provided at a cost Rs. 16.62 lakhs, Rs. 2.53 crores were spent on the training of `Dais' (midwives) for ensuring qualitative improvement in the delivery services. The Minister pointed out that 3,341 special camps on reproductive and child health care had been organised at the primary health centres in the remote areas at a cost of Rs. 3.42 crores, and an additional 1,321 nurses had been appointed on contract in the tribal-dominated districts of Udaipur, Dungarpur and Banwara, and the desert districts of Barmer, Jodhpur, Pali, Jalore, Jaisalmer, Bikaner ad Nagaur. Similarly, the services of assistants, laboratory technicians and anaesthetists have been obtained on contract at a cost of Rs. 2.03 crores. Besides, the vaccine cold-storages and drugs and equipment kits were supplied to various health care organisations at a cost of Rs. 1.93 crores under the programme.
