`Teachers must help students choose career'

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: In view of the wide variety of career choices before students, teachers should provide information and guidance to students in select a career, the Director of Higher Secondary Education, Government of Kerala, James Joseph, has said.

Inaugurating a 12-day training programme for senior secondary school teachers of Kerala at a career guidance and counselling session organised at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) here on Monday, Mr. Joseph emphasised the need for teachers to play a role in guiding students.

"It is not enough if students secure good marks in their board examinations. They should be trained in the art of listening to others and appreciate the right kind of values that contribute to the development of the society," he said.

The principal of RIE, Mysore, G. Ravindra, emphasised the need to provide the right kind of career guidance to students. "In the contemporary school scenario, guidance and counselling occupies a very important place, and all schools should take appropriate steps to train teachers to provide timely guidance to students," he said. Teachers need to develop a rapport with the students. "The teacher can help motivate students and solve many of the problems related to student indiscipline," he added.

Reader in Education, RIE, B. Phalachandra, was the programme coordinator. More than 40 senior secondary schoolteachers from different districts in Kerala are participating in the programme.
