NEW DELHI: Power tools are hardly the stuff that life-changing dreams are made of. But for a few young men from Afghanistan who have come to India to change their lives, tools and a generator is all they need. On a mission to learn, they believe that the skills will help make the difference they need. "We identified them after conducting an aptitude test through non-government organisations and the Ministry of Social Welfare. We worked through the Indian Embassy and the idea was to impart them skills that they would need there. Many countries are involved with reconstruction, but very few have the time to leave trainers there. The aim of the programme is to equip them with the skills to handle power tools so that they can get employment as well as train others,'' said the manager of City and Guilds, Manish Singh. Part of the `Skills Initiative' with City and Guilds and the Confederation of Indian Industry implemented through Mico Bosch Power Tools Limited, the programme also aims to make India the `Skills Capital of the World' and to create a skilled and productive workforce that matches international standards of quality and productivity. In the country for only 15 days to attend the training, these people are trying to cram as much as they can in their short course.
